iStethoscope App for the iPhone

istethoscope.JPG

Among the many apps available for the iPhone this I can say is one of the most useful especially if you are suffering from health related issues. iStethoscope is a new app made available for the iPhone that puts into great use the tons of sensors under the iPhone’s hood just like other sport tracking apps, the iStethoscope primarily uses the iPhone microphone though. The said app allows you to listen to your heatbeat and see your heart waveform. Because of the surrounding noise, it’s not as easy as one would think. You cannot place the microphone wherever you want and expect to hear your heart – you must place it very accurately to hear your heart. To get the best result, one is advised to use a good quality headset and make sure to place the iPhone directly against the skin, not through a shirt. Likewise, if you have a protective case, make sure you’re not using it with iStethoscope. The iStethoscope is available through the AppStore for only $0.99. Now does that get any better?

Redesigned iphone 4 to come out on September 30?

deathgrip.JPG

We haven’t heard of Apple’s antennae-gate issues for quite some time now but if you remember way back in July, Cupertino based firm started shipping out free bumpers to iPhone 4 owners which prevents the phone from losing signal caused by the so called “death grip”. In fact, Apple had promised to send the bumpers free to iPhone 4 buyers until September 30th. Many have been waiting for this date because a new rumor based on a somewhat unconfirmed report on a Mexican website reported that the iPhone 4 will no longer face the antennae problems as of the said date. Marco Quatorze, Director of Value Added Services Telcel has made a comment that when translated through Google Translate, they come out as,

“If the previous plan is over, you will need to hire a new change for iPhone 4. If, for example, already has one and take three months for payment, change the cell with a re-employment and takes into account the previous time, so instead of paying 24 months, only done in 21.”

The translation may not be as crystal clear as we wanted it to be the fact that the carrier expects some change in the iPhone 4 by the end of September and the fact that on the same date Apple’s free bumper program comes to an end gives us more reason to believe that it may be actually be true. On the other hand there could be more to his meaning, or the quote could be incorrect too but nevertheless, we’ll just have to wait and find out until then.

Mobile phone of the future to be made out of cashew nut shells

cashew.JPG

The materials that make up a mobile phone are mostly with the use of plastic materials and in the case of Apple iPhone and Nokia N8, exotic materials like glass, steel and aluminum are being used. But like they always say, you got to admire the Japanese when it comes to technology and how they come up with ideas that make you say, “why haven’t I thought of that before?” Just recently, Japanese giant NEC says that they have developed a bio-plastic that is 70% made out of a compound which is a mixture of cellulose and cardanol- a primary substance that makes up cashew nut shells. Cellulose on the other hand comes from the stems of plants, including grass trimmings that American suburbia throws away and when combined with cardanol, which again is extracted from cashew nut shells, it creates a material that’s ideal mainly because it uses fewer petroleum based products and most importantly it comes from agricultural wastes instead of products which can still be consumed by people or animals. Realistically speaking, NEC say they have to do more research on this new compound before releasing it to the public and that could take approximately 3 years to be be mass produced and in products available on store shelves. No available information regarding the price but as with other eco friendly stuff, it costs more. The question is, are you willing to spend more to stay green?

Dogs used to search and confiscate mobile phones in California prisons

drako.JPG

We all know that dogs are used to find drugs, weapons and people in airports, crime scenes and rescue operations and now, dogs are being trained to also hunt for mobile phones. This is because the 33 prisons in California, like all prisons around the world, have problems with people sneaking in mobile phones and in order to remedy the situation they came up with a solution which is to use dogs to search for these mobile phones. The people who train the dogs say that all phones give off a scent and right now, California has 14 of these dogs with the “gift” and they plan on having 23 dogs in total by the end of the summer to be specially trained to find the smuggled devices. Inmates who have mobile phones can cause a lot of major problems such as call hits on their enemies or order drugs, record the prison’s security procedures and send them to people on the outside who can figure out how to break them out. Child molesters are also using the devices to talk to children online now that most mobile phones have internet capabilities. Dogs remain the best option at the moment to remedy the situation. In fact, there were 4,800 mobiles confiscated in California, via either the dogs or random cell searches as of May 2010. Pictured above is Drako, a 2 year old Belgian Malinois.

M-Dress: A Dress that is also a mobile phone

black-dress.JPG

Are you one of those people who for some reason always misplace or or end up losing your cellphone? The M-Dress might just be what you need. Designed by Francesca Rosella, the M-Dress is a black cocktail dress that can function as a cellular phone. This one-of-a-kind phone uses gesture recognition making it possible for the user to take a call by placing the holding the phone to her ear as you can see in the picture. This way you’ll be certain to not lose your phone ever again, your new worry may now be remembering to avoid dumping the dress with the phone inside the laundry machine. There is no other available information for now except that it should be available this October in the UK.

World Record for Fastest texting broken again in just one day

iphone-4.JPG

About two days ago we’ve reported about Melissa Thompson winning the competition for the fastest texting with the use of her Samsung Galaxy S with SWYPE. She instantly became Guinness World Record holder for finishing the phrase “the razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality, they seldom attack a human” in just 25.94 seconds beating the old record held by 24-year-old Franklin Page earlier this year for typing in the same phrase in 35.54 seconds. And although we may have expected that this record may eventually be broken by another individual no one ever thought that it only would last for a day. The new guy who got the title was Brian Sweet who used the keyboard on his Apple iPhone 4 to tap out the same phrase as the other two did and was a solid 4 seconds faster than the record set by Ms. Thompson. I wouldn’t be surprised though if another person gets the title anytime soon. Well, Records are made to be broken anyway so all that’s important is that they had fun and got the chance to be record holders even for a short period of time.

Samsung Galaxy S will sport Gorilla Glass just like the Dell Streak

samsung-galaxy-s.JPG

Dell Streak has been known for having a 5-inch slate that is good enough to withstand pretty much anything a human would care to throw its way. The glass that was used for the Dell Streak which survived survived a multiple pen stab torture test is the same glass (called the Gorilla glass) we will see on the Samsung Galaxy S (which includes theVibrant, Captivate,  Fascinate and Epic 4G in its brood). iPhone 4 was rumored to have Gorilla Glass at one point and although it certainly can take a beating it’s still not shatterproof. Now that’s one incredible means of protecting the Samusng Galaxy S‘ precious AMOLED.

Pinball Magic App released by New Potato Technologies

pinball.JPG

If you’ve heard about the Jackpot slot Apps that turns the iPhone into a slot machine then you wouldn’t be surprised to know that New Potato Technologies came up with another accessory which is called the Pinball Magic App which turns the iPhone into a miniature version of a Pinball machine. For $39.99, you get a miniature pinball machine that houses your iPhone while it’s running their free Pinball Magic App . The flippers, credit/select button and plunger all work in the game since the pinball housing attaches to the iPhone’s dock connector, and the light-up backbox adds as much authenticity as can be added to a pinball machine the size of your phone and all these should be available anytime soon. It also takes advantage of the iPhone’s accelerometer or “tilt sensor” as the player can tilt.
