GSMA Propose Multi-Device Charger

Cell Phone Charger

Cell phone chargers can be a bit of a pain. If you lose one then you may spend hours searching the internet or calling stores to see if someone has the “A1293hfxX9 second-generation-modified-usb-micro” charger. The environmental effects of the vast amount of duplicate chargers that are kept on back stock for spare parts is also alarming.

To combat this several mobile vendors are agreeing to implement a universal charger. The current plan is to implement a micro USB charger that will function with most new mobile phones by 2012. This will greatly reduce duplicate chargers and manufacturing costs.

Companies that are backing the initiative are Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG, T-Mobile, Orange, 3, AT&T and Vodafone. They will giving up a slight bit of market now that they will not have monopolies on brand name chargers specific to certain phones, but they appear to be taking the higher road and giving a bit back to environment in this case.

Us at TimTechs are definitely happy about the announcement as we imagine most gadget junkies are. One charger for several devices would definitely make life easier for us.

What do you think? Do you see any problems with this type of project?
