Would the iPhone be more popular as a Clamshell? While the Apple iPhone has undoubtedly shaken the mobile world with its touch UI, great design and high satisfaction ratings - what’s in it for those who dislike the candybar form factor?

Apple’s recent patent application for “Dual sided trackpad” has got tongues wagging and suggestions that this patent will bring the next generation of iPhone users a smaller more convenient design for the phone they know and love.

Following the patent application these renderings give an idea of the new concept from Apple featuring a translucent touch sensitive panel overlaying the ordinary multitouch iPhone screen.

The idea allows users to activate trackpad functionality on the flip once opened. Users will be able to dial a number using the inside flip, scroll, view display symbols such as numerals and perhaps most excitingly, users can se both sides of the open flip at the same time, enabling 3D gesture control.

Exciting prospects for both future iPhones and iPod nanos.
