Skype have released a Beta version of Skype For Your Mobile that operates on java-enabled phones to connect you to your friends.
The Beta features chat, presence and you can receive calls with SkypeIn however the service does still use the minutes on your phone as it diverts calls through a local number, rather than being a true VoIP solution.
Outgoing calls are limited to those in Brazil, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Sweden and UK but other functions will work elsewhere.
Set to deepen Skype’s market penetration and possibly opening the door for mobile VoIP solutions for Sony Ericsson P1i among others, the Skype Beta is a promising step forward in affordable mobile communications.

Having already rolled out their home screen search for S60 devices, Google has now invited WnMo users to the party.
The home screen search is claimed to be 40% faster and increase search volume by 20% with the plug-in allowing users to avoid initial steps such as finding and starting the browser and navigating to Google’s site to enter a query.
The plug-in has been enjoyed by BlackBerry users since December and S60 users for a month, so what are you waiting for HTC and O2 owners? Get searching.
Once hailed as the “Palm Killer” in 2002, when such a phrase wasn’t laughably redundant, the Dell PocketPC’s of yesteryear may be gone but are plans afoot to resurrect Dell’s affordable mobile devices?
With Palm devices all but dead, and PDA’s a memory, the manufacturer of affordable mobile devices such as the Axim is re-entering a radically changed marketplace.
Despite rumors that the new Dell devices would run on Android there is fresh speculation that they will be Windows Mobile focussed devices and run GPS.
While WinMo appears to be the flavor of choice for smart phone users and manufacturer’s such as O2 and HTC is this a missed opportunity? Time will tell.
Microsoft has made it official - they have licensed Flash Lite 3 and Reader LE for their WinMo devices, ensuring a smoother Internet Explorer mobile experience.
A welcome relief for HTC and O2 users but when the change will take effect in real terms is uncertain. Skyfire and Opera Mobile 9.5 browsers already provide Flash 3 support and Silverlight is not expected until year end, so it’s an anxious wait for WinMo users.
Apple fanboys everywhere must have sensed a disturbance in the force at the unleashing of the latest iPhone doppleganger which shares the same birthmark as the iPhone, but in reverse.
Who is the rightful heir to the throne? You don’t need to have seen the Man in the Iron Mask to know that almost certainly this impostor is the true king. All hail the Windows Mobile 6.0, 3.2-inch touchscreen-equipped cell phone, he is clearly our social better.
Not only is this equal and opposite Newtonian constant a welcome leader of the anti-iPhone rabble, he also features TouchFLO, Office Software, GPS and encryption technology, so some might suggest his ascendancy is inevitable.
With every other phone seemingly pitching itself as a PocketPC or mobile computer its easy to forget that somethings are just much easier on a PC. That’s the philosophy that brings you Dashwire, a free app that automatically mirrors content on your phone.
If you have ever battled with the QWERTY keyboard on a Blackberry or the small display on a Samsung you will appreciate the extra screen space, full keyboard and enhanced functionality of a PC. It’s easy to share Dashwire’s enthusiasm for the old desktop.
With their Windows mobile freeware you can send and receive text messages without touching your phone, automatically upload photos/video from your phone and share with friends, quickly update and manage my internet bookmarks/favorites and add contacts via your PC that will instantly appear on your phone.
Sounds great huh? Another point in their favor is that being Web 2.0 they can make updates and add features at any time. Check out the video tour.
