Pre-paid mobile phones banned in Kashmir due to cases of bombings

kashmir.JPG

Due to reported cases of bombings in Kashmir , India has issued an order to ban all pre-paid mobile phones in Kashmir. Although many people might get furious, it’s for the safety of all that this has to be implemented due to militants taking advantage of these phones to use for triggering bombs. In 2003, pre-paid mobile phones are linked to attacks since it’s easily acquired compared to post-paid handsets which would require more paper works and identity checks before being able get one. Hopefully, other countries who experience these kinds of terrorist attacks consider this as a solution to finally put an end to this.

Old rotary phones, modified to function as an iPod dock

rotary.JPG

Ever wondered what to do with old, useless rotary phones that might still be left lying around on the attic? With a bit of imagination and a dash of creativity, you can turn this garbage into a stylish iPod dock. The phone has been modified to accomodate iPods and the handset’s ear and mouthpiece act as the speaker while the handset’s cradle is now where the dock is located. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet if this will have a version created that can also accomodate mobile phones like an iPhone or any music cell phones in the future. But nothing seems too impossible nowadays, don’t you think?

texting_while_driving.jpg

On a two-day conference held at Washington, an announcement was made involving 300 law enforcement officials, legislators, telecommunications and automobile industry representatives that they will not be allowed to send or read text messages they are while driving and using government-provided cars and phones or when they are on official business, according to an executive order signed by President Obama. U.S. transportation secretary, Ray LaHood said “Driving while distracted should just feel wrong — just as driving without a seat belt or driving while intoxicated. We’re not going to break everyone of their bad habits — but we are going to raise awareness and sharpen the consequences.” This order took effect immediately due to 5,870 people getting killed and 515,000 injured in last year’s crashes related to driver distraction, most of the time concerning mobile devices. In the near future, they are looking into banning text messaging to rail operators, interstate truck and bus operators and school bus drivers while driving as well. Hopefully, this solves the problem especially if innocent passenger’s lives are at risk.

Customer Service showdown among the “big 4″

the-big-4.JPG

To know which among the big four (Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T) can provide the best quality customer service, a showdown was conducted by the kids at Laptop Magazine to identify which ranks the highest in terms of each company’s friendliness, knowledge, and timeliness.T-Mobile wins the contest with an overall score of  A- by answering all of the questions and offering the best web support. Both Sprint and Verizon on the other hand got a score of B; although Sprint was not able to answer all the questions, it was very organized and considerate. Verizon however, offered solid support yet not as friendly as the other 3. Surprisingly, last on the list was at&t with an ending score of C+ and this is because the representative couldn’t figure out how to get email up and running on its Blackberry.

2009 ban decreases in-vehicle texting in California

california-texting-ban.jpg

Taking your eyes away from the road for a mere second while driving put yours, your passengers’ and the innocent bystanders’ lives in grave danger. Texting or even placing phone calls while driving is very risky whether or not you try your best to keep your eyes on the road as it takes the driver’s focus away from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. Thankfully, the Automobile Club of Southern California came up with an idea to implement a texting ban and surprisingly, it lessened the number of drivers dangerously texting while driving by up to 70%! Moral of the story: There is no text message or phone call urgent enough to cause you your life. Be safe and exercise caution while driving and using a cell phone. If it is very important, pull over for a few minutes and this could prevent deaths that are pretty much avoidable.

Bluetooth ring concept

ring.JPG

If you thought bluetooth headsets looked awkward, here is another bluetooth device that could turn curiosity around. A fashionable ring that serves as a mic and a speaker. Though this device excludes the purpose of  “Hands free” this device makes the “talking-on-the-phone” hand gesture a reality.  The device hasn’t been announced as official yet, but if it does come out to the market, it might turn out to be a talk of the town.

Solar Powered Mobile Phones by Uganda Telecoms

uganda.JPG

People in Arua have always had problems when it comes to utilizing their mobile phones because of the limited access they have due to the national security grid. In the past, they had to walk  great distances just to recharge their phones. Fortunately, ZTE came up with a bright solution to this problem by creating solar powered mobile phones. Since then, Uganda became the sole distributor of these phones which prove to be a lot of help to citizens of Arua. Now all they need to do is position their phones under direct sunlight to recharge the phone. Another great thing about this phone is it’s made from recycled materials and of course the built-in solar panel which allows it’s user to use the phone for 12 hours for just an hour of exposure to sunlight.
