Global Mobile Phones Shipments and Marketshare 2008 Q1

Global Mobile Phones Shipments and Marketshare 2008 Q1:

Nokia is still on top with a constant growth in sales; 91.1 Million handsets in Q1 2007 to 115.5 Million handsets in Q1 2008. The clearest changes are seen in Samsung and Motorola ; Samsung has increased sales by 33% from the last Q1 and Motorola has dropped sales by 39.4%.

Sony Ericsson’s Q1 2008 is not a reliable sales estimate as most of their 2008 releases will only be released around mid of this year.

An Advise to Nokias Tube Marketing team

apple-iphone.jpg
Dear Nokia,

I and many others would like to give you an advise of how NOT to market your new device the “iphone killer” .

1) Do not announce your phone based on a competitor’s device : iPhone killer.

This announcement clearly stating that you have NO creativity and you’re simply copying Apple’s steps. We have seen several ipods and iphones killer and none have reached a competitor’s level.

2) Do not announce the model as “killer”.

Once you have announced the model as a “killer” you have instantly raised expectations. The Iphone’s fans are many; a “killer” must be stronger than its victim . Your model’s strengthens should therefore outweigh that of the iphone by a large margin. Now that’s a tough goal to reach.

3) Show us something

Once you advertise a product, show us some pictures or videos. I have only seen concepts from Nokia, Nanotech and others.

4) Your harshest judges are the average Joes and Janes

Most new products whose launch campaign revolves around the iphone or ipod “killer” fail to kill apple’s fan club. This is due to their emphasis on technical aspects, such as its memory capacity, the speed of its chip and so on. That may attract tech heads, but the main target are your average Joe and Janes. What most people are concerned with and what makes most peoples jaw drop, and consequently run to the apple store, is the stylish model, the ease of using the devises and its compact look. Further, most companies get so carried away with their attempt to kill apple’s sales that they end up with so many functions, making their device bulky and super heavy. To the average Joes and Janes, a phone is an accessory.

Nokia 5800 XpressMedia Tube vs Apple iPhone

Phrases like iPhone killer have become meaningless when discussing possible rivals for the Apple marvel, but how does the Nokia 5800 XpressMedia fare head to head spec for spec with its more fancied rival - we decided to take a look.

Nokia 5800 XpressMedia vs Apple iPhone

First the Nokia 5800 XpressMedia

• 3.2-inch touchscreen display
• 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus
• Quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM/EDGE radio
• 3G UMTS/HSDPA
• Bluetooth 2.0
• WiFi
• GPS
• 3.5mm headphone jack
• TV-out port
• 140MB on-board storage
• 111 x 52 x 14.5 mm
• 104g

Now the Apple iPhone responds

• 3.5-inch touchscreen display
• 2.0 megapixel camera (no autofocus)
• Quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM/EDGE radio
• no 3G UMTS/HSDPA
• Bluetooth 2.0
• WiFi
• no GPS
• proprietary headphone jack
• proprietary TV-out port
• 8GB or 16GB on-board storage
• 115 x 61 x 11.6 mm
• 135g
It’s pretty tight the Nokia has given Apple a run for its money in the specifications department, but will its usability be any match for eveyone’s favourite mobile browser?
