HTC G1 and Android fans have been getting a bit of hot and cold recently with the possible release date of the Android software build, CODENAME: Cupcake.
While people are anxiously awaiting the release of this update to fix some of the more apparent bugs in the Android system and also add some key features which have been missing from the original release T-Mobile has been putting up roadblocks for the official release of the update.
T-Mobile is being quite vague about any type of release date giving the old “We will update you as T-Mobile G1 software updates are made available” the information on the Cupcake website is slightly conflicting with that lack of commitment.
Whatever the case the Android users among us are anxiously awaiting some kind of update. And are you wondering why? Well lets look at just a small sample of the bug fixes and new features there will be straight from the Cupcake website:
MMS
- Save attachments from MMS
- Faster conversation list scrolling
Email
Settings
- New menu option to list running processes in Settings->ManageApplications.
Music
- Music playback fades in after suspending for phone call.
- New media search intent allows for 3rd party apps to launch or respond to media searches based on artist, album, or title.
Browser
- Updated WebKit browser core, synced with Nov 2008 WebKit version.
- Copy / paste is enabled in the browser.
- Find is enabled in the browser. To find text, choose it from the menu and type the text to find.
VoiceDialer
- VoiceDialer supports ‘open app’ command
Camera/Gallery
- Video recorder mode
- Share intent for videos
The video recording and voice dialer updates particularly excite us here at TimTechs. What do you think? Will this make you reconsider the G1 or other future Android devices?

Apple has officially put the kybosh on any iPhone Nano rumors. The blog-o-sphere (I guess that counts us) got more than a little excited about the prospect of Nano phones being released for more casual users who aren’t looking for contract phones.
These rumors were started by a JP Morgan analyst who’s sources were revealed to be Gazoo and the Toothfairy. Those rumors caught fire and speculation went every which way and was relying on people who heard “stuff about stuff.”
However Timothy Cook, the Chief Operating Officer for Apple, made it clear that Apple had no interest in pursuing an iPhone Nano at this time. The focus of Apple according to Cook are developing the “world’s best phone” by pushing software and applications to the limits.
This does fit more into Apple’s progress into the mobile market as their Apps store is reaching new heights in sales and that is the driving force for most iPhone 3G users. If they were to create new devices as well this could impede developer’s progress as it makes it much more tricky to design software compatible with multiple devices with different screen sizes and input methods.
So this bloggers will say “oops” for getting caught up in the frenzy. But really, it was fun to dream wasn’t it?

Mac and Nokia 5800 XpressMusic users rejoice. iSync is finally here for Nokia’s first fully touchscreen device. Us Apple nerds have been waiting.
Nokia has always been quite Mac friendly and iSync has been available for most of their smartphones. This allows Mac users to get all contact and schedule information to be synced with the phone in question. Up until now however, the 5800 XpressMusic iSyncing software was not available. Now syncing this touchscreen device with your Mac information will never be easier.
This is welcome news to smartphone fans who happen to be Mac users. They have long missed out on many smartphone features due to the PC-centric nature of the smartphone industry.
Do you base any of your Smartphone purchasing on your OS or computer hardware? Let us know if this is going to affect your purchasing?
