Barack’s New Blackberry

Sectera Edge

There was more than a little talk in the blog-o-sphere regarding newly sworn in President Barack Obama’s desire to keep on to his Blackberry. With understandable security concerns he was being encouraged to give up the device should it make him more vulnerable to mobile security breaches.

However, he persisted and holding the most powerful seat in the land has prevailed. This does not come without any compromises though.

The Result? The Sectera Edge. This is a Blackberry type phone designed by the contractor General Dynamics. As you can see from the diagram above you might say it is a little “souped-up.”

The phone features dual secure and non-secure functions for almost every connection method of the phone. Meaning that the phone can communicate with other phones operating on secure channels and also phones operating on normal networks. Phone calls, texts, emails are all functional to communicate with any phone in the world.

The technical security features get into a lot of different letters in a row which presumably means that someone put a lot of work into making sure it will take a lot of work to decrypt anything coming out or going into the phone. Whether that will be enough to stop some ambitious 15 year out to make trouble is yet to be seen.

Questions still remain if this highly unique nature of the device will only make it more easy to identify or even give people an easier time of tracking the president.

Obviously security officials in the government are declining to comment on anything, but as this device was developed for the National Security Agency it is considered to be a “secure mobile environment portable electronic device.”

If you yourself are considering upgrading your security on your mobile device perhaps it would be worth considering the listed price of $3,500.

What we want to know is does it support MP3s?
