Yahoo Announces onePlace

Yahoo onePlace Screenshot

Billed as a “revolutionary mobile content management solution,” yesterday’s launch of Yahoo’s onePlace approached bookmarking with mobiles in mind.

Focusing on updated content rather than a fixed page and tailored to your location, preferences and your friends activities, onePlace has re-contextualised bookmarking for the small screen.

Expected to launch in Q2 2008 the RSS, FriendFeed and Delicious mashup looks to be a win for Yahoo still reeling from their narrow escape from Microsoft’s monopolistic clutches.

Olympian Cracknell Crosses Continents with N82

James Cracknells Progress and Journey Image

Not content with having already pocketed dual Olympic Gold Medals, James Cracknell is currently traveling from England to Morocco on human power alone, aided by his Nokia N82.

Utilizing the A-GPS feature on his phone, as well as using it to listen to music and send picture updates to his website and WiFi, James trip entails rowing the channel between England and France, cycling onto Spain and then swimming the Strait of Gibraltar.

Rowing, cycling and charity work is all well and good but I’ll be impressed when he clocks Casino Royale.

Apple SDK and iPhone Rumors

Apple iPhone SDK Image

Insiders at Apple’s Annual Shareholder meeting on Tuesday have let slip a few hints about what may be on the cards for the iPhone and SDK.

Jobs addressing the meeting covered a broad range of issues confirming some suspicions and putting pay to others. He agreed that Apple expects to selll 10 million iPhones by year end and that they intend to sell it in India and China “someday.”

Rumors that Flash would be coming to the iPhone got a nay, with suggestions that the current state of Adobe’s software is beyond the capabilities of the iPhone to run it smoothly.

Among other suggestions, Jobs hinted that the SDK will open the market to gaming opportunities on the device, but failed to address rumors, started in part by himself, that the iPhone would be going 3G by year end.

Citigroup’s Richard Garner has stirred the pot on this issue indicating that a 3G iPhone would be available between April and June of 2008.

More news to follow the SDK release tomorrow.

Microsofts Silverlight Comes to Symbian Smartphones

Microsoft Silverlight Logo

It was only a matter of time before Microsoft’s Silverlight platform cut itself a piece of the Symbian’s pie. Essentially a competitor for Adobe’s Flash, Silverlight enables users of the world leading smartphone software Symbian S60 and S40 devices to deliver rich web applications.

S60 devices like the Nokia N82, N95 or N96 will benefit from the cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in from late 2008. Until then there’s always Flash Lite.

Myspace Native on iPhone

Myspace on iPhone Image

The result of early access to the iPhone SDK, the Myspace app details are thin on the ground but it is said to be impressive in comparison to current mobile alternatives.

There’s some doubt as to whether the lack of a native Adobe Flash port will inhibit access to Myspace’s music and video sections but regardless the app is likely to require a few tweaks following tomorrow’s SDK unveiling.

Will Myspace be charging for this app? When will the SDK friendly version be released? You will know when we know.

Watch. This. Space.

Microsofts Transparent Lucid Touch Concept Phone

Microsoft Lucid Touch Concept Images
Forget about CEBIT in Germany todays most interesting news comes from Microsoft’s TechFest fair where the tension between more buttons and larger screens has a new solution: the Lucid Touch concept phone.Creating the illusion of a transparent phone, the Lucid Touch allows users to input using multi-touch located on the backside of this intriguing device.

Will this be coming to Windows Mobiles in the not-to-distant future? HTC and O2 users no doubt could benefit from a backmounted QWERTY keyboard perhaps, and game designers will be wetting themselves at the prospect of additional control functionality.

While we have covered a lot of concept phones recently the potential here is obvious, and if you won’t take my word for it check out the video.

7 Tips to Extend Life of Your Phone and Battery

Broken Phone Image
So you’re chatting to that girl from Friday night everything is going great, your making jokes she’s laughing - your life is a musical. Then it happens. Without warning the phone that was fully charged this morning goes limp. Dead. No battery life, no signal, no Friday girl.

This doesn’t have to be the way.

Here are some tips to expand the life of your cell phone battery and your cell phone:

1. I don’t care if you were trained by the Nomadic Gypsies or Cirque du Soleil juggling your phone is a bad idea. Dropping your phone on a hard surface, or at all, can cause damage to your phone and cell phone battery. If you have dropped your phone take it to your nearest service center and consider bypassing the Trapeze.

2. I know you’re busy - what with Friday girl, your assistant and lion-taming and what not, but take the time to read the manufacturer’s directions. Be sure to follow the first charge instructions most importantly.

3. When fire-walking consider leaving your phone with your lovely assistant. Avoid extreme temperatures, hot or cold, be it flaming hoops or leaving the phone in your car in the dead of winter. Also any moisture may corrode your phone quickly.

4. If you must take your battery out of your phone avoid contact with metal objects such as keys, coins or throwing knives, these will interfere with your battery’s ability to function.

5. You wouldn’t use Nike Jordan’s when doing the higher and likewise you should only use the exact cell phone charges that are compatible with your exact cell phone.

6. Give to a stranger. I know its counter-intuitive, but many companies will recycle or reuse your cell phone, most times even giving you a credit toward the purchase of your new phone. Some even give the phones to charitable organizations so why not give back to your adoring public.

7. While you and Friday girl may have a good month of furtive phone calls and late night hook-ups, your phone is a major commitment both financially and in terms of time. It is likely to last 2 years or more and though you may go dutch on dinner, when it comes to buying your phone don’t skimp.
