GPS and Camera Integrated into NGage Games

Nokia NGage Handset

Will Shen, Head of Production in North America for N-Gage, has let the cat out of the bag on the future of Nokia N-Gage gaming: GPS and camera incorporation.

How exactly the two functions will be incorporated is not completely clear but he indicated they are “looking at creating games that harness the power of [a mobile’s] built-in camera, GPS receiver and any relevant skill [that it] may possess that could help inspire and execute innovative games.”

Whatever the outcome Will has made one thing clear the focus will be on innovating rather than gimmicky gaming.

What would you like to see orienteering? Capture the flag? Urban scavenger hunts?

Demonstrated at CeBIT it uses a combination of camera phones, MMS and optical character recognition, Otello allows you to take a photo of the Statue of Liberty, a DVD or a UFO for instance, and the search returns with related and relevant entries, such as Wikipedia.

With plans underway for a B2B platform for advertisers and a trial with German newspaper ‘Bild’ where readers can photograph articles to get more in-depth information, the potential of the image search seems enormous.
